Hypocrisy – the curse of the world!

It doesn’t make much difference where you look, it’s all around us. Sometimes blatant, sometimes covert – a hidden agenda or a well-intentioned strategy. And if a saying attributed to Keanu Reeves is true, depression is not so much a disease as it is the result of seeing the world as it is. To wit: The human society we have built, not the natural world.

We suffocate under hypocrisy because it makes us powerless and destroys what we value and what we need. We are like drowning people gasping for air, trying to save ourselves from the exhaustion of keeping our heads above water. We have occasionally struggled and pushed people underwater, which we normally wouldn’t do, but when you’re gasping for air, you do the strangest things.

Sincerity and honesty are like air. We need it to breathe, we need it to live fully, we need it to build up, we need it to share, and we need it to love. That’s why hypocrisy is hidden because we all know that too much of it ruins everything. People are convinced that it is a necessary evil in certain circumstances, but it gathers like smoke in a room and suffocates us unless we step outside.

We like to point out the hypocrisy of others and call it a threat, but the elephant in the room is our own hypocrisy. There is no doubt that the hypocrisy of others is a problem, but “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me pull the mote out of your eye,’ when all the time you have a beam in your own eye? You hypocrite, first pull the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly and remove the speck from your brother’s eye,” said a wise man (Matthew 7:4-5). The problem is that old.

In the current crisis with Russia, our position is weakened by the West’s inherent hypocrisy. When Putin or others point this out, we are embaressed. It is embarrassing because we claim the moral high ground while our pants are around our ankles. The way we present our liberal democracies on social media, or the internet makes any traditional society cringe at what they see. The videos that go “viral” or invade social media suggest that we have lost our minds. It’s easy for authoritarian regimes to point to this and ask: Is this what you want? Is this how you want your children, your daughters to be exploited?

You only have to consult a thesaurus to find out what the antonym of hypocrisy is, and the words that come up make it very clear what sincerity and honesty mean. To some this may seem like hogwash, and some may just turn away, but if you want to know what single word explains what is going wrong in our world, I’d say it is hypocrisy. Because our society is so complexly interactive and interdependent, it affects everything we do, and we can’t escape it. But rather than enumerate where hypocrisy can be found, I would rather list the antonyms of the word that are more inspiring.

Honesty by Billy Joel

If you search for tenderness
It isn’t hard to find
You can have the love you need to live
But if you look for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind
It always seems to be so hard to give

Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you

I can always find someone
To say they sympathize
If I wear my heart out on my sleeve
But I don’t want some pretty face
To tell me pretty lies
All I want is someone to believe

Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you

I can find a lover
I can find a friend
I can have security until the bitter end
Anyone can comfort me
With promises again
I know, I know

When I’m deep inside of me
Don’t be too concerned
I won’t ask for nothin’ while I’m gone
But when I want sincerity
Tell me where else can I turn
‘Cause you’re the one I depend upon

Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you
